The Birth

2 November 2018
"The bile levels are at 18 as per the last report. (they were 14 a couple of weeks back)", the doctor said as Ankita and I listened on tensely. This coupled with the high sugar levels and 3 loops around her neck forced the doctor's advice to deliver the baby today - exactly a month before the due date.

"We can either do it today afternoon or tomorrow". It was Shahrukh Khan's birthday so had to be today!

The process started. The head of NICU came, another pediatrician came, the anesthetist came. They assured all will be well but the baby would have to be in NICU for around 2 weeks.

Drip was put on and we waited. At 2.30 PM, they came to take Ankita to the OT. She refused to take the wheelchair. A drip bottle in hand, she walked through the corridor and into the OT.  I was asked to get permission from the doctor if I had to be in OT. It was denied.

As I waited outside the OT, some people walked in and out. Then around 40 minutes later, a nurse came out. A pediatrician, who was also outside talked to the nurse in Kannad. At the end, she asked her if the baby cried. She said "Yes".  I guessed the context. And asked the nurse if the baby is born. She said "Yes". Then as she was closing the door to the OT, I asked if is a boy or girl. She did not answer and went inside. The pediatrician also did not know.

A few minutes later, the doctor came out - with the baby. The incubator had already been kept outside. Just before shifting, the doctor said  - It is a girl.

I asked if Ankita had seen her. She had! The doctor removed the nappy to show it was indeed a girl. She was unimaginably small.
First few thoughts were - what would have been Ankita's reaction on knowing it was a girl. Don't know why but we were sure that it will be a boy.
Then I noticed that her face was so similar to the 3D scan we had seen. (Of course. why wouldn't it!).

The incubator was wheeled away to the NICU. She would be there for the next few days.

She was born at 3.07 PM and weighed 1.878 kg. her height was 42 cm.
